As a Direct Support Professional (DSP), Community Inclusion, you will assist people who experience a developmental or intellectual disability at home and within the community to help them make choices, garner respect, increase their independence, and develop relationships.
You will also be an “ambassador” to the community at large, often advocating for and providing information about how to support individuals who experience intellectual and developmental disabilities so that they may fully engaged in their community.
This job requires the stamina to provide adequate physical, social, and emotional assistance and direct personal care. Types of support you can expect to provide as a DSP include assisting with activities of daily living such as personal hygiene, ensuring a healthy and safe environment, socialization experiences, behavior supports, house cleaning, grocery shopping, meal preparation, mobility, and equipment maintenance.
DSPs understand and respect people’s rights and responsibilities and will assist each client in exercising their rights.
Average Wage Range
$13.70-$18 per hour

Becoming a DSP Community Inclusion Specialist is an opportunity to begin a career in the field of I/DD social services where no prior education, training or certification is required. Many employers will have a pre-hiring screening that may include a reference check, a physical lifting test of 50 pounds, and a criminal history background check.
Some DSP positions will require some driving. If this is the case, potential candidates will need to be at least 21 years of age, have a current and valid driver’s license, a reliable personal vehicle, at least three years of driving experience, auto insurance, and a clean driving record.
